Election in Malaysia, find out where you are supposed to vote

Perhaps most of you folks out there know where you are supposed to vote. For the rest who will be doing their part for the first time (including me)..ehem, here’s an online website for the Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya or SPR where you can find out where you are supposed to be putting that ‘X’ sign and shove it into the ballot box. Well, we may be able to make some difference. Who knows? The Malaysian election scene is somewhat different from our US brothers’ 2008 presidential election but it’s interesting nevertheless.

Man jailed for misusing emergency contact centre

I got this in the e-mail through a newsletter from callcentres.net which I subscribe to:

A Victorian man has been jailed after making more than 3600 crank calls to the emergency 000 contact centre.

The man made 3674 calls to 000 between May 2005, and December 2007, was usually drunk and abusive to agents. He was initially arrested last August and had his mobile phone seized, but called 000 two days later on a new phone to ask where he could get his old phone back.

Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority spokesman Wayne Debernardi said fire brigade, police and ambulance services responding to crank calls were being dispatched to homes where there was no emergency. The man was jailed for three months but started making more 000 calls after his release and is now serving a four-month jail term.

I wonder how it is in Malaysia. Can’t seem to find any stories on a person actually being fined or penalized for abusing our emergency line number. Crank phone calls happens in the call center where I work almost daily. They range from kids who just shouts at you or even using vulgar words to adults who are drunk and having fun teasing our poor agents. Well, there’s so many lonely people out there I guess. That’s why it’s good therapy for them to start blogging ey?

Ringtones and it’s so called history

Motorola Star TacRemember just a few years back when ring tone is just this one melody without the ‘real tone’ that we have today? At the time ring tones started with some built in monophonic melody that you can’t customize. You pretty much have to choose from a few one that has been pre-installed by the phone company. Most of it were classical music that are under public domain. When the technology became a little better, folks were able to ‘customize’ their own ring tone melody by fiddling with the keypad. You know like playing a do-re-mi on a normal keyboard. I used to be really good at that. Making songs that made people go like “Hey, that’s so cool. I want one too!” Soon after I noticed people were putting up websites on how to make this song and that song by giving you the keypad guide.

Another so called breakthrough is when polyphonic ring tone was introduced. it’s like having a whole bunch of musical instruments playing together. For example you have the drums, bass part, the rhythm and melody all at the same time. Depending on the device that plays these tones, you will either get a very ‘real’ sound or perhaps a very ‘fake’ digital sound. Normally the files consist of a MIDI files. Of course it can’t play vocals. Only the melody part.

At this point of time, we have moved to the ‘truetone’ concept or “realtone”, “mastertone”, or “superphonic ringtone” whatever they call it. This is where you actually hear the actual music with the vocals and all. Most phones now supports many file formats like mp3, AAC, WMA even Wave formats. You can even get Free Ring tones or even download it for a fee. The possibility is endless now. You can have genres like Country Ringtones, R&B Ringtones, Jamaican Ringtones, Pop, even Rock Ringtones.

I have noticed that the latest handphones like the ones I bought for my parents for Christmas, (it’s a Sony Ericsson), even has ‘video ringtone’. Meaning I can play any video files as a ringtone whenever someone calls me. For example, if you have a boss that you don’t like, you can add a video of Sponge Bob or something whenever he calls. You can even record your own friends or family video just like what I did. Whenever I call my dad, there will be a video playing with me shouting “Oi dad! It’s me! Pick up the phone lah!” Cool eh? What’s next?
