I want to eat at Friday’s

I have something to confess. I really am a Cro-Magnon when it comes to food. I prefer to eat with my bare hands and hold two pieces of bones with plenty of meat in both hands. And why do I feel like walking around with a club (before marriage) and bring back a nice looking mate to my cave home? Flintstones may have influenced me a little but I think it’s pure genetic.

Studying in a hotel school in Petaling Jaya, we have been thought of etiquette, table manners and most importantly like my lecturer used to say, (with a British tone that is), “..always bring your food to your mouth and not your mouth to your food”. She said that when she saw me slurping some Consommés with my face at the same level with the table.

I felt empty. Is this how life is supposed to be? Following rules after rules. Even a simple thing like answering natures call, you have to line up or even pay to do it! Imagine that? I’m supposed to get rid of something but I need to pay for it!

I have a buddy who used to work as a person whom are paid (a big some at the time for me) just to open doors for people. I was like, huh? There is such thing? I wanted the job too but he says it was already full. “Okay, so what else is great about this place”? I asked. The food man, and the booze! Okay, as a college student, when you say food and booze your eyes goes all white and your tongue will stick out like a overworked Chihuahuas. Rightaway when he told me the price I immediately went to the fridge and ate my last leftover apple and went to sleep….

Fast forward a few months…

Sudenly, during my first year working as a telemarketeer, the company I worked for decided to celebrate with food and booze. My eyes went white again. I asked if it’s totally free and freeflow and my boss said, “like hell yeah!”. I almost fainted. It happened to be the same place my buddy was working. This was in Petaling Jaya Section 14.

The place looks real cool and cozy too. I did saw some cool chicks too. (Wish I had my club with me) Anyway, we went upstairs and got ourselves a table. I looked at the menu and almost went bonkers because everything looks darn good! I ended up taking the rib ‘thingy’.

I got mine a little bit late since I ordered last I guess. But the sight of that huge ribs being carried towards me almost like floating makes my eyes watery. Everything seemed to be in slow motion. I can see the waiter bouncing slowly left and right towards me and smiling..and smiling. The smell of that rib ‘thingy’ was so fragrant I can almost melt right there. But the part where I get to hold those ribs with both hands and eating them like how it’s supposed to be was one greeeat satisfaction! I wish I could put the photos here but I think I might have eaten it after it was developed.

That heavenly place is called T.G.I. Fridays. (I never knew what TGI stands for until a few weeks later) But I sure thank God for that experience. Whenever I have enough moolah to spread around, this is one place I can get in touch with my Cro-Magnon ancestors.

Oh my friend still works there. I think he left the door job and start managing people including those at the door.

Food Experience #14

Has anyone here tried ‘nasi padang’ before? It’s an Indonesian dish that I believe originated from the the city in west Sumatra called…well what do you know? ‘Padang’! I had the opportunity to try the special dish a few weeks ago. But the setup is not in a village but rather in a restaurant. Quite classy too I might say.

The restaurant is called Restoran Puti Bungsu Batam. Now Batam is actually an Indonesian island close to Singapore. Anyway, let’s talk about the food. This was my first time trying out Nasi Padang. We planned to check the place out at the last minute actually. We just took a turn instead of the usual restaurant we frequent.

Now this cuisine is very unique. What they would do is to bring out little plates of dishes and lay it all out on the table. People like me will go like, wow! However, you don’t have to eat it all. You only choose the ones that you want to eat. Now the rule is, as long as you don’t touch the other food, you are not charged for it. It’s really interesting. Of course it’s weird too. Having all those little plates there while we eat somewhat makes me think of cleanliness… hmm

If you happened to be in Kuala Lumpur, head over to Jalan Yap Kwan Seng. It’s just next to Restoran Kampung Pandan. The building itself was a former Auntie Nat restaurant from my previous post.

Food Experience #13 (Special Appearence-Maya Karin)

Concorde-Maya Karin
The entrance

On Tuesday, a group of us from the office went out to have a berbuka puasa (break of fast) with our fellow Muslim colleagues. We chose the Concorde Kuala Lumpur since it’s just nearby from the place we work.

What you will see when you walk in

Concorde is located just next to Hard Rock K.L. So those of you who dine at the Concorde, there will be plenty of fun after words :D This is my first time dining at Concorde’s ‘Melting Pot’ cafe. They do receive lots of great reviews from the media.

View from the smoking section

All the boys walked here, my boss and two other female colleagues came by car. We arrived rather early. Since there was so much time, I walked around the buffet line to check out what’s in store for us. The spread looks gorgeous. However as a Malaysian who are more accustomed to a very big spread of food when it comes to this type of settings, one may feel that the spread is somewhat not that ‘much’. I saw lamb, some tepanyaki section, local cuisines, oysters and stuff as well as a beautiful spread of dessert section.

The Batak strollers

By before 7pm (break of fast is at 7:15pm), our table was already filled with plates of food. Even the desserts were not spared, they took everything! Our table looked like another buffet spread… I was not really hungry yet since I had late lunch earlier.

The fish I missed out..

I like the entertainment provided. They have this ‘Batak Strollers’. They are from Indonesia. Visiting each table and asking if there was any special song requests. I asked for ‘Dahil Sayo’ a Phillipino song which they can’t play. So I asked for the song ‘Cantik’ made popular by Katon Bagaskara. They can’t play the song either. Oh well, in the end they played their own choice which was nice too. There was a few ‘dangdut’ numbers too. Great harmony from these guys. I love em.

Me and Maya just loved the limelight..he he..

Oh but did I tell you who was dining in nearby? The beautiful Maya Karin of course, a local artist. I don’t know much about her but I know she acted in some horror film (kind of a Malaysian hit) and also have produced a music album?? But she sure is gorgeous. She was sitting with a group of people. I can see that they must be some crew or something. Another popular face was Fasha Sandha (not sure if I got the spelling correctly). I only knew about her after a colleague told me. She’s alright too. In fact they were both alright and even took some snapshots with us. Yummy! I did ask Maya whether or not she comes here regularly. She answered no. Only when they have some ’shooting’ or something..I did not hear those last few words from her anyway..

This bunch can really eat!

My personal verdict, Concorde’s Melting Pot is really a nice and cozy place to dine. Friendly staffs and great food, combined with a snazzy atmosphere, it sure is value for the money. By the way, we spent like almost RM1000.00 today. Phew!

Fasha Sandha / Sanda / Shanda ….?
