How much was your pocket money when you were in primary school?

KFC

I was having a ‘healthy’ dinner alone in KFC the other day. While eating my meal that consist of 3 piece chicken with all the sides, I noticed two boys having fun eating their meal too. Not only that, they ordered a second time too. Life is good!

When I was around their age, eating in a place like KFC would be like a BIG thing. My pocket money was 50 sen when I first entered standard one. I think my dad gave me a raise to Rm1.00 or Rm2.00 by the time I reached standard six. Somehow, that was enough. Perhaps inflation was not that bad at that time compared to today?

How much did you get for pocket money? Rm5.00? Rm10.00?

Yep. I will be going through the Golf Green to get a shortcut to go to the ‘Love Kun’ mini market.

I was given RM0.50 every school day from Pri 1 to Pri 6. Has always been enough for me… heck I can even save some!

From Sec 1 to Sec 3 it was RM1.50… but actually it’s more like RM1.10 because that figure includes the bus fare which was RM0.20 one way.

    From Sec 4 to Sec 5, I think I had RM2.00.

Jewelle- Wah. Such a darling mother lah you. But I really think allowance after chores is the best way to educate kids about values. That way, they will learn about achieving goals and stuff.. (macam lah I got kids already)

PaPa-That’s what’s great about our parents. They give us whatever they have. I know my parents was not well-to-do too at the time, but I always make them buy me stuff.. he he. God bless all parents!

Kids nowadays start their sentences with “I want….!” so it’s no wonder that they have been lavished with material stuffs and lotsa pocket $$$.

Our time, er…I think we always think twice before asking for a rise in our meagre allowance. But it raised us, somehow, I dunno how, but somehow, to be more budget conscious.

I also tend to save my pocket money so I could give myself a treat at the end of the year. By saving RM0.30 – RM0.40 per day, I always end up being a ‘hundred-air’ by the end of the year.

My pocket money? I had a monthly allowance of RM30.00 a month. The rest of the days, I ended up taking food from home. hehehe….
