I played on the same guitar Steve Vai played!

I would like to introduce you a little bit about this guitar idol of mine. His name is Steve Vai. Perhaps you have heard of him, perhaps not. I came to know about this Steve Vai character when I bought my first ever English tape in 199+. It was called ‘Power Ballads’. That’s when I know groups like White Lion, WhiteSnake and MrBig to name a few. He was in this group called WhiteSnake. I heard the song ‘Is this Love’ and was hooked by the guitar solo thing. Soon after this will be my break up song of sort.. ha ha

Steve Vai’s albums are seriously great. The first time I heard his composition entitled ‘Liberty’ I was blown away. This is one unique guitarist with a very different approach. I did went to a concert organized by Digi, our local mobile service provider with other sponsors called ‘Rentak Asia‘ a few years back. It was held in Stadium Bukit Jalil. It was supposed to be a big time concert featuring all the big names in Asian music as well as some International ones. (The concert was not really successful) I think the turn out was not that encouraging. I got 2 tickets for free from them. There I saw Steve Vai in real life. I was not that far from him since those who stayed back very late was all this small group of Steve Vai fans. We also had Eric Johnson, Eric Sardinas, Sugar Ray and more! Too bad the organizers had to stop their show since it was ‘too late’. The time was almost like 4 am+ if I am not mistaken.

Anyway, I just want to tell you that last Wednesday during my choir practice, I asked my buddy Patrick to bring his guitar since my Strat is being sent for service to John, the guy I bought my Roland Cube 60 from. I did not expect him to bring his prized possession which is an Ibanez guitar he won through a contest a few years back from HitzFm. This guitar was personally signed by Steve Vai himself. To actually play this guitar with my unworthy solo’s and rythm will sure make Steve Vai sad. Do you have any guitar idol yourself?

My other idols would include Richie Sambora, Slash from Guns n’ Roses, Eric Clapton, BB King, Paul Gilbert and many more which I can’t even come close to in terms of playing quality and such. (Can still fake some solos la)

I get my fuel from my music. Help me replace my guitar strings. Click the guitar.

    I LOVE SLASH!!!!!

He’s like the coolest guitarist I’ve ever seen.

You saw Vai and Eric Johnson live? [green with envy] They are, imho, among the world’s top 10 greatest rock guitarists. As for myself, I’ve seen Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), Paul Gilbert (Mr Big), Angus Young (AC/DC) & Slash, amongst others. The first 3 names are imho also among the world’s top 10. But if there ever was a guitar god, it would be either Joe Satriani or Yngwie Malmsteen.

wow.. steve vai.. oh man.. thats cool. all the above names used to be guitar god when i tried my friend’s guitar. In fact, i think i bought a few of their album so i can learn their solo by myself…

Cindy- Slash, how I adore that fella. There was this one concert he did a solo for the God Father movie theme… wicked!

Bengodomon-Wha.. I never knew you were the guitar type…’Don’t judge a blog by it’s theme’ ya? I like Satriani too but I think Vai made his musical style more advanced after being tutored by Satriani. Yngwie? He is one crazy dude. His Neo classsical rock music has been the basis of many guitarist including my guitar crazy kampung folks in kampung Popot, Kudat, Sabah.

PaPa- I also never knew you were into guitars? Don’t give up your dreams.

Steve Vai is definitely a God. My favourite guitarist is Marc DeHugar though. He was in a band called the Candy Harlots in the late eightie to the early nineties. You should check them out. You’d like them. Theyre good for pretty much any guitarist.

Now this is what I call PROPERTY!
This is priceless oh. Hold on to it.

Love the guitar too, Yngwie and his arpeggios, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix etc.

CicakCobain- Now that’s a cool name!
I only wished this was mine, but it belongs to my buddy Patrick. I’m more of a Fender type of person. Won’t be using much of the tremolo system and the humbucker pickups anyway. (That’s just an excuse, if he gives me this I will sure take also!)

    Give you?

Sure!! In your dreams….. ha ha ha….

… Hi. I see you have Ibanez RG series. I have exactly the same guitar, even color :-) Only I have replaced pickups. But I don’t know what is number of this RG series. Do you know this number ? … thanx

  16. Site Admin Kay Stanford Jr Kastum on September 22nd, 2007

Cembo As mentioned in the post, this guitar does not belong to me. But I can check with my friend if you seriously want to know..

  17. cembo on September 24th, 2007

… There is no number written on body of this guitar, only marked as “RG Series”. I have been looking for particular information on the internet, but without success. If you can find info, that would by great. Thank you …

  18. Site Admin Kay Stanford Jr Kastum on January 17th, 2008

Cembo- Like you mentioned, there is no actual model printed. Just “RG Series”. Tried online too but can’t seem to get more info… hope Steve Vai is reading this.

I have replaced original pickups by dimarzio. At bridge is SuperDistortion and at neck is EVO. It has improved my sound a lot. With my zoom G9.2tt it sounds quite nice, even plugged directly into PC (cubase)through USB, without some valve poweramp with cabinet. Here is some short example on my soundclick website: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=740837 ..

  20. Site Admin Kay Stanford Jr Kastum on February 7th, 2008

Cembo- Dude. That really rocks man! I almost thought Steve Vai did some parts there.. :D

  21. Cembo on February 7th, 2008

Thank you :-) That was actually experiment after i brought my new pedal in home. I love playing … Steve inspired me a lot. I saw him at Sydney stadium at G3 with Satriani and Petrucci last year, and i realized that Steve is biggest guitar entertainer on the world. Besides Steve, my biggest influence was Nuno Bettencourt in Extreme’s LP Pornograffitti time. That album has really kicked me. Or amazing guitar of Richie Kotzen on Poison album “Native Tongue”. But my biggest guitar hero is Greg Howe. He is playing most amazing rock and fusion guitar stuff i have ever heard. His music is totally different from typically beautyfull Steve’s style, but very varied and colorful too. If you don’t know him, i would like to very recommend you to listen some his great albums as “Parallax”, “Five” or “Uncertain Terms”. Especially Uncertain Terms. That album is pure rock guitar art :-)…
