Loganathan Arumugam of the Alleycats passed away at 10.50am Monday at the Mount Miriam Hospital here. He was 54.
Loga, as he was fondly called, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday. He was diagnosed with lung cancer eight months ago

Those were the news excerpt I took from the Star online. Sad day for music lovers here in Malaysia…
FYI, Loga played the flute as well as doing vocals for the group.

I just read yesterday’s newspaper that he was admitted in the hospital for lung cancer.

Then today, BOOM, he lost his battle. :( I’m still shocked!

I spent 7 years of my life with Loga and the band. I was his brother, David’s wife then. I live in the US now and was devasted when I heard the news. I wish in more ways than one, that I could bring back time. I regret never having able to say my farewell. I will cherish my memories of those years and hopefully llive to someday tell about it. May he finally find eternal rest. Condolonces to David and family.

Dorathy- Folks here in Malaysia will always have fond memories of Loga and Alleycats. Most of us grow up listening to their music on the radio and TV.
Perhaps you should tell your story one day.

 1981/82,was concernt in Stadium Negara.Attended ,right after Form Six.They were back, frm HK,I believe. The stadium was packed and atmosphere electric.I am glad ,I attended. What can I say,I am glad of growing up in that era.The music and the singers circa late 7os to mid 80s and maybe till late 80s early 90s will have no comparison as far as I am concerned!Till the nd,I dragged my wife to see them perform. The last outing was at Curve, but did not see Loga. Was wondering!I reminded her, that we are watching history, but it became history sooner than expected.

Raj- It’s really nice to know one’s personal encounter with the band. I wish I had a ‘little’ story to tell but unfortunately, I never had a chance to watch them live.

The news came to us shocking, as much as we wanted to go attend the funeral, we could not. We had Ramesh to represent us from Cameron Highlands, he brought dozens of ‘Sekuntum Mawar Merah’ for Loga.
Our childhood friend Karen Chong came down from Oxford recently and Davis sang Senandung Semalam for her at PJ.
Karen called from Oxford to extend her condolence. We gonna miss you Loga, with love… Karen Chong, Emily, Ramesh, Kumar, Chandra, Anba, Mega, Pat.

Pat- I’m sure it is. Sounds like you guys were good mates with them.

As a little girl of 4, I took one look at my late fathers record of the Alleycats , played it on the record player , and fell in love… with LOGA !! I had the biggest crush a 4 year old could have on anyone at the time. Growing up singing Sekumtum Mawar Merah in the shower all the time… and keeping myself updated with the groups tours and albums.. I always told myself that one day I will not only watch them perform live, but I will have a special relationship with them!

At 23, it was like dream come true for me when I walked into Uncle Chillis in PJ Hilton while the band were performing Andainya Aku Pergi.. Wow.. I was mesmerized. I then was introduced to the band members during their break and we became fast friends. Loga who would come around our table, make us laugh with his antics and jokes and such. He would also dance , and boy did he have his groove on! Always smiling … always joking..full of life and energy.. this is how I will remember him always.

Loga also shared a special bond with his son , I would see them hugging each other , walking around the pub, his son would always give the band and his father a standing ovation after each and every song – which is something i thought was amazing . There was so much love in the air everytime I caught their moments together.

In Dec last year , Loga told me he was not feeling well, I asked why, “bad cough la girl .. I will be resting a lot soon , maybe take a break from singing for one or two months .. you take care of yourself and always know who your friends are “… We snapped a photograph together that evening , he gave me a big hug before he walked out of the pub. Little did I know that would have been the last I would see of him . .

I broke down in tears when my workmate told me of his passing. I had lost my father 7 months ago, also a singing sensation in his day.. To have lost another great man in music , is simply devastating. But I believe , as my sister told me, God takes the good ones first {;o) and I will hold on to the memories.. the good ones as they are all I have. Great memories. .

My deepest condolences to uncle David and family as well as the amazing Alleycats !

Yesodhra- I’m very sure he is in a great place at this very moment. Looks like he lived a good life with great family and friends all this while.

I first saw then performing live in a club , Colesium, in Gurney Drive, Penang in 1988. I was 19. They were electrifying. Since then I have been always catching up with their live performance in clubs around the country. Loga always came up to me to have a drink betewen the gigs. My last audience was sometime last year in The Curv, Damansara. I am so proud of Loga & the Alleycats and even more proud that they are form Penang. I will be missing Loga. Alleycats will never be the same again. Abang David, keep Loga’s spirit with Alleycats forever. Listening to the song, Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi, sung by Loga, the last line goes, ” …Kini aku hanya dapat berdoa, agar berbahagia kau disampingnya, selamat tinggal, aku mengundurkan diri….” , brought tears to my eyes…
So long my friend, Loganathan, RIP.

  18. Kay Stanford Jr Kastum on June 18th, 2007

Zahir- Our country has lost yet another great performer, but not before they thought us about friendship, the spirit of ‘muhibbah’ and having passion with whatever you do.

  29. J. Navien @ Redscorpion on August 14th, 2008

I have been a fan of the Alleycats since I was a kid. The passing of the Late Loganathan is something we least expected. I was shocked!

In this age, where music is all about money and fame, the Legends from Penang lived on to mesmerize us with their catchy tunes and trademark voices.

Viknes, the son of Uncle Loga is a good buddy of mine. We studied together. Down-to-earth is the phrase that best describes him. He was the first person I befriended on my first day in college… sitting right next to him in the classes, after that with my other buddies Jeya and later Gopi. I didn’t know that he was a son of an Alleycat for nearly a month! Yet we were spending about 4-5 hours together daily until then.

Most of my family members and friends are die-hard fans of the Loga and David. Imagine their excitement when I told them that my buddy is a Alleycat Junior!

I was informed that his sister has started her singing career. I wish her good luck. We are proud that the legacy of Loga will live on through her voice.

Unfortunately, it is sad to say that with wide fan base that has been following them for the past 30 years (or more), the Alleycats were never given proper recognition. Nevermind the Datukships or Tan Sri titles, these superstars, if they were British citizens would have been SIRs with KNIGHTHOOD- at least ten years ago!!!

What about royalty? Did it ever reach them at all? I did’t see any of the band members living a luxury life at any point of time.

Compare that to a freak who wins a reality show and gets all the media attention, which makes his/her value reach sky-rocketing heights. Then, of course all the endorsement and sponsorship that they are showered with. Then they’ll just sit back and relax to enjoy the bounty and get involved in scandals for the next couple of years!

I think that says it all.

Alleycats will always live on in our hearts. Nobody can ever deny that, and they dare not!!!

  30. Kay Stanford Jr Kastum on August 14th, 2008

    J. Navien- Alleycats deserve to be in our music history books man!
